Who is

Florio Poone diamonds CC?

Florio Poone Diamonds CC is a professional establishment based in Kimberley trading in rough diamonds. We purchase unpolished diamonds from registered producers within the province, neighboring provinces, registered diggers, registered diamond trading houses and Licenced diamond dealers. The company was founded by two shareholders, the late Mr. Edward Poone a black South African male and Ms. Antonella Florio-Poone a white South African female whose roots derive from Italy. The business was initially established in Lesotho, however the laws changed and mines were no longer permitted to sell a percentage (10%) of their production to local buyers. Subsequent to this, they moved to South Africa and registered a Close Corporation in March 2006. Florio Poone Diamonds CC is currently trading from two registered offices both located in Kimberley Northern Cape.

Why we are Special

There are a few aspects that make our company special; however we will mention the few that we are passionate about: Although we buy and sell rough diamonds to both domestic markets and International markets; our main focus is to purchase unpolished diamonds from local producers (diggers) within the Country and Province as we believe charity begins at home. Since its inception, Florio Poone Diamonds CC has implemented training, Skills development and mentorship plan aimed at empowering Previously Disadvantaged South Africans to set up their diamond dealerships. We have successfully created our own CSI programme aimed at uplifting our previously disadvantaged communities, disabled and orphaned kids. The programme is implemented both in South Africa as well as Lesotho. “We do charity work not because of publicity, but because we feel like giving back to society”. To date we have sponsored, financed and donated over a Million Rand on Community Businesses, Faith Organizations, Sports, Education, Small scale mining, disabled and orphaned kids as well as the needy.

Future plans/Projects

Florio-Poone Diamonds has recently entered into a joint venture with Basadi mining a female owned mining company.

We are currently looking for investors for the new venture. Both local and international investors are welcome.

According to Juvenal “many individuals have, like uncut diamonds shining qualities beneath a rough exterior”. Therefore our priority is to develop small scale mines, to ensure sustainability and to improve the unacceptable informal and environmentally unsound practices that have prevailed in the small mining sector in the past. Empowering these small scale mines will uplift our economy thus creating financial stability. It will also increase their production therefore creating more job opportunities. This is also in line with the legislation of the Mining Charter, Minerals and Petroleum Resources Development Act – To promote job creation, upliftment and empowerment of the historically marginalized. “Basadi mining” is our first hands on projects and we hope that in five years from now we would have empowered the two shareholders and created enough jobs. We are currently looking for investors both locally and internationally to head start our projects in order to create jobs.

BEEE Status

Florio Poone diamonds CC is black empowered based on the fact that the shareholder is a white female South African.

According to the revised BEEE policies by the department of Trade and Industry a white South African female has been classified as previous disadvantaged therefore our Close Corporation’s procurement level of contribution would be regarded as a Level 1 contributor. The current ownership percentage of our company is 100% owned by Mrs. Antonnella Florio-Poone a white South African female subsequent to her husbands passing. The Mining charter stipulated that “The diamond and precious stones industries are required to archive 26% (within 10 years) and 15% (within 5 years) ownership….”; our Close Corporation has achieved this target. Initially the ownership was 50% black owned and 50% white owned; it has since changed as mentioned above.

Founders

The late Edward Poone

The late Mr. Edward Poone grew up in the beautiful mountain kingdom of Lesotho where diamonds are plentiful and the people are open and welcoming. It is because of his background in the friendly Basotho nation that the late Mr. Poone was able to relate to peoples of all nationalities, colors and creeds across the globe. A successful self made businessman who has built an excellent reputation in the diamond industry. “During the apartheid years many people were not given the opportunity to acquire a diamond dealers licence, therefore many in the industry became diamond smugglers. Today society still associates diamond dealers as crooks and smugglers”. I had no formal training in rough diamonds, everything I know is self taught hence I implemented the training programme. Two of the beneficiaries who received training from Florio Poone Diamonds have since opened their own diamond dealerships. Through our mentorship programme we hope to create more black Licenced diamond dealers in the country. We serve and grow constantly to be able to contribute not only on an economic level to our country, but also to our community.

Antonella Florio Poone

Ms. Florio Poone has extensive knowledge of diamonds as she has been a Licenced diamond dealer in rough diamonds since September 1995 in Lesotho where she retained her office. She later moved to Ladybrand (Free State) where she operated as “Antonella Florio Poone Diamonds”. In November 2004 she was issued and granted a temporary dealers licence by the South African Diamond Board. In March 2005 she opened an additional office in Barkly-West (Northern Cape) before moving to Kimberley Northern Cape.

“Everything I know about this business I learned from my father who had a diamond cutting business in Lesotho for over twenty (20) years; and employed approximately two hundred (200) employees. My passion on the other hand is developing previously disadvantaged woman through information sharing, mentoring and financial assistance. I believe if every wealthy person took at least one entrepreneur to mentor/finance the world would become a better place. I have identified a black female digger; whom we have an ongoing mentorship programme with as I see great potential in her. We have since assisted her through funding of small scale mining machinery, working capital and training her employees on rough diamond valuation; however her project was short-lived due to unfair circumstances beyond her control. Subsequent to this I decided to enter into a joint venture with her together with another young black female to open our own diamond mining company called “Basadi Mining” which is in process of acquiring mining permit. My goal is to empower woman, young and old to become independent successful business woman.

Quick-witted and ambitious Ms. Florio-Poone is not only a Licenced diamond dealer; she possesses a BA Honours degree in languages and Co owns a party shop (Party and More) with her husband Mr. Edward Poone. The business is also located in Kimberley and it’s the only party shop that offers a range of catering equipment and function decor that’s commonly used in conjunction with party equipment rental businesses. The party shop also offers an onsite kiddies party venue, renting of mascots and dress up clothes as well as party accessories.
